Meet Augusta!
A striking four to six-year-old American Pitbull Terrier/Shepherd mix from Indianapolis, IN, whose tricolor coat and loyal nature make her a captivating companion for the right family. Weighing in at a strong and sturdy 65 pounds, Augusta is both affectionate and incredibly intelligent. She showed up on her own adventure in late August and, while she’s made herself at home, it’s clear she’s searching for a dedicated, experienced pet parent who can guide her with understanding and care.
Augusta’s love for her people shines through in her constant desire for snuggles and companionship. She’s exceptionally smart and food-motivated, picking up on cues quickly when treats are involved. Though she hasn’t had formal training, she has a strong eagerness to learn, and with positive reinforcement, Augusta could truly thrive with the right guidance. However, due to her past, Augusta needs a home where her boundaries are respected and her potential triggers are understood.
It’s important to know that Augusta has had some challenging interactions with unfamiliar people, including an incident where she did bite someone she knew, despite previously getting along with them. She can become reactive in certain situations, particularly on leash when encountering other people or animals, and she has shown signs of aggression, like going after pant legs. For this reason, Augusta would be best suited to a home with a secure, fenced-in yard where she can enjoy the outdoors at her own pace, without the pressures of a bustling neighborhood or multi-pet household. She will need a strong, experienced caregiver who is ready to work with her behavior and understands how to manage a high-energy dog who requires ongoing support and structured training.
Augusta’s ideal family is one that has experience with large breeds and is comfortable managing her strong instincts. With patience, training, and a consistent routine, Augusta has the potential to settle beautifully into a home where she feels safe and understood. She isn’t a fit for homes with small children, other pets, or those who need an easygoing companion, but for the right person, Augusta offers unwavering loyalty and plenty of affection.
To make sure that Augusta has a great start with her new family, we have a canine behaviorist available for a free consultation.
