Meet Duke!
A gentle almost nine-year-old Belgian Malinois/Labrador Retriever mix currently in San Marcos, CA, whose tan coat, white accents, and striking black muzzle give him the look of quiet nobility and the heart of a true companion.
Duke weighs 60 pounds and brings with him a calm, affectionate spirit. He’s the kind of pup who wants nothing more than to be your constant companion. Whether you're curled up on the couch or working from home, he’ll be right by your side with a soft nudge or a warm presence at your feet. With formal obedience training under his belt, Duke confidently responds to commands like sit, stay, come, and leave it. He’s house-trained, neutered, and microchipped, and while he’s past his puppy energy, he still enjoys chewing on toys and bones when relaxing at home.
But Duke does have one very important need: he doesn’t do well when left alone for long stretches. Separation anxiety causes him real stress, and when he’s anxious, he may chew on things or try to escape. A home where someone is present most of the time (whether that’s a remote worker, a retiree, or a family with a flexible schedule) would help Duke feel safe and secure. Loud trucks, fireworks, and crates are also known triggers for his anxiety, so a peaceful setting with a consistent routine is key.
He’s selective with other dogs, he used to attend doggie day camp and coexists with a dog in his current home, but he can be reactive on leash and isn't a great match for households with multiple pups. Duke is not compatible with cats, but he’s very gentle with children and thrives in homes where love flows freely and things stay on the quieter side.
Cuddly, loyal, and devoted, Duke is looking for a caregiver who understands his need for companionship and calm. He doesn’t need a lot, just a peaceful place, someone to love, and the comfort of knowing he’s not alone.
