George

Meet George!

A devoted three-year-old Great Pyrenees/Saint Bernard mix currently in Hickory, NC, whose essence is steady as the mountains and just as breathtaking.

With a striking tricolor coat and a towering yet gentle stature at 112 pounds, George is a beautiful blend of loyalty, intelligence, and quiet strength. Though his early life was harsh and lonely, George has spent the last 15 months with a foster family who helped him rediscover what it means to be safe, loved, and understood. He’s not a dog who demands constant cuddles. He’s the type who’ll quietly lay at your feet while you’re cooking dinner, or settle beside you on the floor as you unwind with a movie. His affection is deep, and when he chooses to show it, it’s a moment you won’t forget!

George is house-trained, leash-savvy, and knows several commands like sit, down, shake, easy, and stay. He thrives on predictability and responds beautifully to gentle guidance and clear routines. He enjoys human companionship but also values having his own space. He’s the kind of dog who builds bonds slowly, and once you're in his circle, you're there for life!

Because of his sensitive nature and past experiences, George is most compatible with a calm, structured environment and a guardian who understands that trust isn’t instant, it’s built over time. He’s not suited to apartments or small condos; he needs room to roam, think, and feel secure.

While he has made remarkable emotional progress, it's important to note that George had one fear-based bite incident during a meet-and-greet. A well-meaning visitor moved too quickly into his space and repeatedly patted his head, a sensitive area for George due to past trauma. In a separate instance, George snapped (without making contact) when a new person leaned in face-to-face with him in an unfamiliar environment, a clear signal that he needs space and time to feel safe before close physical contact. A professional trainer evaluated him and confirmed that George is not aggressive but is a sensitive, thoughtful dog reacting in ways consistent with his breed and background. The trainer described him as a "normal dog" with a deep soul and a big heart who simply needs a patient and caring guide. His compassionate trainers have kindly offered to support his future family with video or phone consultations.

George has also shown some food-related guarding tendencies, so mealtime management and a thoughtful setup will support his continued growth. George may be most compatible in a home without other male dogs, though he has a beautiful, balanced friendship with Piper, a playful female companion who encourages his confidence and joy.

While George and Piper would love to be adopted together if the opportunity allows, they are also available separately. Each is ready for a new chapter in a home that understands their individual personalities and unique needs.

Could your home be the peaceful landing place George has been waiting for?
