A loving five-year-old Shepherd/Husky mix from Redding, CT, whose essence is a gentle, devoted spirit wrapped in a beautiful cream coat and an impressive 75-pound frame.
Ernest is the kind of companion who wants to experience life right alongside his people. Whether he’s following you from room to room, leaning in for affection, offering sweet kisses, or joining you for a walk or hike, his happiest place is close to someone he trusts. He’s a wonderfully social boy who is often friendly with new people and has shared his life with children, a cat, and even chickens.
This affectionate boy also has some important needs his future family should understand. Ernest is sensitive to activity and change and can become overstimulated, vocalize, or have trouble settling when his surroundings become busy. A calmer environment, predictable routines, frequent walks and hikes, positive reinforcement, and a steady human presence help him feel secure.
Ernest needs daily Keppra and Prozac to manage epilepsy and support his anxiety. His seizures are generally well managed, and his future caregiver will need to confidently continue his medication routine and veterinary care.
Another important Ernest quirk is his dislike of barriers. He experiences barrier frustration and is not comfortable being confined with crates, kennels, or gates. His future family will need to provide a safe environment without relying on these management methods.
Ernest is good with other dogs, although thoughtful introductions and continued guidance will help keep interactions comfortable. Most importantly, he needs plenty of human companionship and is not suited to routinely spending long workdays alone. A remote worker, retiree, or family with someone frequently home could offer the presence he needs.
